virtual collegiate community

Black Girls Do STEM (BGDSTEM) Virtual Community is geared toward our college aged girls to serve as a space where they can engage directly with BGDSTEM mentors and other students in the community.

    Creating a Virtual Space

Supporting postsecondary persistence, this online network connects alumni, Black and femme-presenting STEM students with mentorship, peer support, and college and career resources. This community is an alumni lead putting our college and career aged young professionals in the driver seat of their own continuous support and connection.

Participants report increased retention and success in college STEM programs, mitigating isolation and reinforcing long-term engagement in STEM pathways.

    WHO IS THE COMMUNITY FOR?

    • Femme presenting Black women 17 years of age or older
    • Must be enrolled in or graduated from an institution of higher education
    • Preferably pursuing a degree in a STEM major or tech program

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO JOIN?

    • Black girls in STEM need a space where they can feel comfortable to ask questions and find support – our community accomplishes just that!
    • We want our girls to have a network of other Black women in STEM so that they always remember they are not alone even if they are the only Black woman in many of their classes

    VCC SPEAKER SERIES

    • In addition to a supportive, Slack, community, BGDSTEM VCC offers online workshops held by professional women in STEM to help our college-aged girls navigate through various STEM fields.

Something new is coming. In April 2026, we launch a new YouTube series designed to inspire curiosity, confidence, and possibility in STEM. Stay tuned for what’s next.

Interested in being Interviewed by a BGDSTEM Alumni?

Are you a Black woman in STEM? Are you interested in being interviewed by our alumni for Youtube? Our alumni want to hear from you about your career whether early, mid or late share some of your must know and wish you would have known career insights.

Stay connected and give back by joining the BGD STEM Alumni Committee. This is your opportunity to support current students, strengthen our community, and help shape the future of Black girls in STEM through mentorship, leadership, and service.

“I love being a part of a community of women that look like me and share the same interests as me where we can share ideas with each other, support each other, etc.”

    2024 GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT

    Laura Brown

Laura Brown is an incoming freshman at Xavier University of Louisiana pursuing a dual degree in Biomedical Engineering with the ultimate goal of becoming a cardiothoracic surgeon. Motivated by a family history of heart disease and the knowledge that there are currently fewer than 10 Black women cardiothoracic surgeons in the United States, Laura is dedicated to bridging the healthcare gap and increasing health literacy within her community. Her extensive leadership experience includes serving as captain of her basketball team, Vice President of the Black Student Union, and a Senior Leader for the Black Girls Do STEM program. Additionally, she recently completed a research internship at Washington University focusing on pregnancy-related hemorrhaging in women of color, a role that further solidified her commitment to using STEM to advocate for underrepresented populations.
