About the Organization
BGDSTEM provides a transformative pathway program for 6th-12th grade youth in St. Louis. We currently support 150 girls across this grade range.
- Middle School: The middle school program launches with STEM Saturdays, an eight-month, 40-hour core program covering all STEM areas with hands-on workshops. The program is geared towards STEM career pathways and includes on-site mentorship from working STEM professionals, evidence-based social-emotional activities for personal growth, and immersive career exploration through experiential learning field trips. The STEM Saturday Academy empowers through real world access and engagement with STEM industries in our community.
- High School and Beyond: The high school program, called Empowerment, Preparation, and Placement, offers support services to girls in 9th-12th grades and includes math and science tutoring, ACT preparation, externships, internships, and summer research opportunities. These offerings are made possible through collaboration and service partnerships and are open to all middle school girls as they matriculate to/through high school from our STEM Saturday Academy. Beyond K-12, we host a Virtual Collegiate Community that leads into a post-secondary strategy to further support girls through university and/or training programs into the workforce through targeted resources, knowledge sharing and community building.
Position Summary
BGDSTEM engages a dynamic team of Program Facilitators to deliver exceptional, equity-centered learning experiences while building strong, supportive relationships with youth participants. Under the direction and guidance of the Program Manager, Program Facilitators cultivate curiosity, confidence, and skill development among Black girls—helping to shape the next generation of STEM leaders.
This is a part-time, non-exempt position that includes training, planning, and direct session delivery. Almost all activities occur on Saturdays. New part-time facilitators will participate in:
- Group professional development and training (January-February 2026)
- Independent review of session content, culture planning, co-facilitation practice, and Saturday program delivery (January–October 2026)
- Ongoing coaching, post-delivery debrief, analysis and reflection with the Program Manager
- Monthly group professional development sessions
Program Facilitators will work approximately 15–20 hours per month. January–October. Coaching and planning meetings can be scheduled flexibly based on availability.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Learning and Development
- Internalize, reflect and build on the Black Girls Do STEM’s commitment to equity during professional development sessions
- Engage in equity-focused training and reflection aligned with Black Girls Do STEM’s mission
- Collaborate and build community with other Program Facilitators and Black Girls Do STEM staff
- Participate in professional development to build content knowledge and delivery skills across the program year
Program Delivery and Relationship Building
- Co-plan and deliver inspiring, hands-on STEM workshops for middle school youth
- Build authentic mentoring relationships with participants that support their personal growth and STEM career aspirations
- Participate in reflective coaching sessions with the Program Manager to support ongoing development and program excellence
- Provide feedback and insights to the Program Director to help sustain and improve program quality and relevance
Qualifications
- Deep commitment to the mission of BGDSTEM and to advancing equity in STEM education
- Minimum 2 years of experience in community-based or school-based youth programming
- Track record of building empowering relationships, demonstrating empathy and building rapport with Black girls
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build rapport with middle school-aged youth
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Comfort working both independently and collaboratively as part of a team
- Some post-secondary education and work preferred

Program Facilitator FAQs
What does the schedule look like on a Saturday?
Youth sessions begin at 10am, facilitator shift begins at 9am.
Youth are dismissed at 2:45pm, facilitator shifts end at 3:30pm.
Example Schedule
9-10am: Session Setup and prep
10-10:30 am: Youth Arrival and Team Building
10:30am -1:30 pm: Hands on STEM lesson with integrated SEL
1:30-2:30 pm: Mentoring and Project Based Work Time
2:30-2:45: Final Youth Reflection and Clean up
2:45: Dismissal
2:45-3:30 pm: Facilitator final clean up and reflection
How are facilitators scheduled?
BGDSTEM has a cohort model and facilitators are scheduled with the same youth every month on either 2nd, 3rd or last Saturday monthly. Facilitators will have their schedules by March 1st. Facilitators are scheduled 2 Saturdays monthly 9 am-3:30 pm. We can have facilitators alternate schedules Saturdays but will ask facilitators not make it a habit of not being available for their specific scheduled cohort. As well as meet the 75% attendance requirement, facilitators must attend 12 of their 16 scheduled Saturdays annually, whether the absences are excused or unexcused.
What are the Monthly Expectations?
Monthly Facilitators will attend Professional Development sessions (2 hours), Individual coaching (up to 2 hours) and co-facilitation planning (up to 2 hours) that makes up the time beyond the Saturday 9am-3:30pm. Which gives the estimated time spent of 15-20 hours monthly. Coaching and planning are routinely on average 45 minutes, but can vary depending on individual needs. Coaching and co-facilitation planning can be scheduled on facilitator schedules within reason but PD is set by the program manager and is not flexible because it is the full group. Typically, PD happens on the 1st Saturday monthly with adjustments made for holidays. All monthly commitments are mandatory and not an option even as scheduling is flexible.
What is the Coaching Format ?
All coaching is virtual but can be held in person upon request. All coaching is done with program leadership either the Program Manager or Director. An internal outline is shared and there is a 45 minute dialogue after direct observation of a facilitated session and review of facilitator reflections; the post section focuses on learning and development and program delivery and relationship building.

Curriculum Structure
SSA uses an integrated STEM and career-exploration curriculum. Students are exposed to multiple STEM disciplines before having opportunities to go deeper into areas of interest. Current and recent topic areas include:

- Fashion Engineering/Technology
- Aeronautics & Aerospace Engineering
- GIS Mapping and geospatial technology
- Agricultural Technology & Engineering

The curriculum incorporates engineering design, design thinking, problem-solving, experimentation, and hands-on making so students are learning by doing rather than simply receiving information.
BGDSTEM STEM Saturday Academy Learning Model
STEM Saturday Academy uses the 5E Instructional Model—Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate—as the foundation for its science and STEM learning experiences. The model moves students from curiosity and questioning to hands-on investigation, application, reflection, and demonstration of learning.
